8 Things to Consider While Buying a Marine Bilge Pump

Every boat lover would appreciate a good, working device that makes time on the boat more carefree and pleasurable. Add to that fact that some marine products are absolutely essential for proper security of your boat and you have a little choice about them.

However, when it comes to products like a marine bilge pump, there is no second opinion about its essentiality.

But there are lots of options. So it’s important you make the right choice while selecting one.

1. Size of the boat

Size of the boat would be the first factor that would determine the type of ship bilge pump you would need. Essentially any boat that is large enough to go out on minimal deep waters should be provided with at least one pump. But beyond that minimum size, the boat length determines that type and number of boat pumps that would be sufficient.

Take into consideration the size of your boat and the kind of purpose it normally serves. If you are into more vigorous water sports then your boat would need a good investment in this marine equipment. Also, you’d need more than one marine bilge pump in such a case.

2. Capacity of marine bilge pumps

Ideally, the size of the boat and the capacity of the pump both determine the efficiency and security of your boat. For larger boats, a larger capacity ship bilge pump would be needed. The capacity of a marine bilge pump is given in GPH (gallons per hour) i.e. amount of water bilged every hour. For larger boats of more than 20 feet length, a minimum pump capacity of 3000 GPH would be needed.

3. Type of the bilge pump

Bilge pumps come in electrical and manual form. An electrical bilge pump is more suited for larger boats that need greater efficiency of bilging. A manual sea pump would be suitable for a smaller boat like open boats etc. however, while an electrical pump would seem an obvious choice in terms of better efficiency and greater capacity, if you have a boat and are determined to buy a pump, its best to invest into a manual pump as well. Manual bilge pumps offer greater security as they are much less likely to show a technical failure, hence a better security.

4. Number of the pumps

Both the capacity and number of boat pumps installed together make the entire bilging system of a ship. When you are out looking for this particular marine equipment, make sure you go for a number that would suffice the need of your boat. Typically for a boat of up to 20 feet length, a minimum of two bilge pumps would be needed to ensure an efficient bilging system.

5.Make a Good Investment

Bilging system of a boat is one of the most important aspects from boat’s safety point of view. Hence, it is best to make a good investment in it. Choose the number, type and capacity of the sea pump to suit your boat size and needs. It’s best not to scrimp and go all out for the best available.

6.Read into the fine print

One thing you can always look into while buying a marine pump is its fine print, not literally though. For example, the pump capacity given in GPH is based on the laboratory findings which are much different from the real conditions a pump would be functioning in.

So while buying any such pump, take into consideration the immense frictional forces that would come into play.

7.Hose pipe

Always ask for a straight hose pipe instead of a corrugated one for purpose of expelling the bilge water. A corrugated pipe offers much greater frictional resistance to the pump, making it exert more and wearing out its life. A straight hose pipe poses no such problems.

8.Bilge pump with intelligent control

If your boat has little space to fit in a bilge pump, ask for a pump with an intelligent control that will allow you the best of bilging action within that limited space. These pumps are provided with remote strainers that allow the pump to bilge water without having to be in that particular spot.

When buying marine products, it’s always best to make sure you know what you are looking for. A good research, knowledge of available products and a thorough understanding of the purpose that you want that equipment to serve can help you hit a jackpot every time.
